TV SHOWS COMING BACK!!

After the strike: When are your favorite shows coming back?
With the writers' strike in the history books, networks are rushing to firm their spring schedules with a new crop of episodes to begin filming in late February and early March.

Most shows will produce five to nine new installments, set to begin airing in March or April. Until then, expect plenty of repeats.

Some newer series will sit out until fall, and others remain contenders for next season, including Friday Night Lights and Las Vegas.

ABC's Lost is expected to save the last of six remaining episodes to air after a four-week break with five new ones starting in mid-April, moving the show to 10 pm ET starting April 24.

The alphabet net has also decided to go out with a bang on May 22, airing the season finales of Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy and Lost one day after the official end of the season.

FREEDOM BEGINS HERE

Crisis
(As heard Wednesday 2/20 on the show at about 8:50 a.m.)

Pornography. It is the secret sin we don’t like to talk about. Yet it is single handedly corrupting our society—destroying marriages, families, careers, and even churches. A startling survey* recently revealed that 50% of Christian men and 20% of Christian women admit they are addicted to pornography. Not just struggling…addicted. That’s 84 million Christians. *ChristiaNet.com 6/6/07

• Chuck Swindoll calls it “The #1 secret problem in your church.”

• Of the 10,000 calls, emails and letters Focus on the Family receives daily, this represent their number one incoming request for help overall.

• New Man Magazine’s most frequent request from readers is to refer them to a service or ministry that can help them with their sexual temptation. “New Man readers NEED this product.” - from a New Man representative

• Oprah calls it “America’s #1 addiction.”

Secrets of long life from around the world

1: Olive oil

Four decades ago, researchers from the Seven Countries Study concluded that the monounsaturated fats in olive oil were largely responsible for the low rates of heart disease and cancer on the Greek island of Crete. Now we know that olive oil also contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that may help prevent age-related diseases.

2: Yogurt

In the 1970s, Soviet Georgia was rumored to have more centenarians per capita than any other country. Reports at the time claimed that the secret of their long lives was yogurt, a food ubiquitous in their diets. While the age-defying powers of yogurt never have been proved directly, yogurt is rich in calcium, which helps stave off osteoporosis and contains “good bacteria” that help maintain gut health and diminish the incidence of age-related intestinal illness.

3: Fish

Thirty years ago, researchers began to study why the native Inuits of Alaska were remarkably free of heart disease. The reason, scientists now think, is the extraordinary amount of fish they consume. Fish is an abundant source of omega-3 fats, which help prevent cholesterol buildup in arteries and protect against abnormal heart rhythms.

4: Chocolate

The Kuna people of the San Blas islands, off the coast of Panama, have a rate of heart disease that is nine times less than that of mainland Panamanians. The reason? The Kuna drink plenty of a beverage made with generous proportions of cocoa, which is unusually rich in flavanols that help preserve the healthy function of blood vessels. Maintaining youthful blood vessels lowers risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.

5: Nuts

Studies of Seventh-Day Adventists (a religious denomination that emphasizes healthy living and a vegetarian diet) show that those who eat nuts gain, on average, an extra two and a half years. Nuts are rich sources of unsaturated fats, so they offer benefits similar to those associated with olive oil. They’re also concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals, including antioxidants.

6: Blueberries

In a landmark study published in 1999, researchers at Tufts University’s Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging fed rats blueberry extract for a period of time that in “rat lives” is equivalent to 10 human years. These rats outperformed rats fed regular chow on tests of balance and coordination when they reached old age. Compounds in blueberries (and other berries) mitigate inflammation and oxidative damage, which are associated with age-related deficits in memory and motor function.

Food For Thought

My reading today in "Serve God, Save the Planet" was quite interesting. The author, Dr. Sleeth, was offering some things to consider when making our food choices. From page 119:
To obtain billions of hamburger patties for a few cents each, America's fast-food restaurants buy much of their meat from Central and South AMerican farmers. These farmers clear-cut forests, often starting a cattle-raising process that can be sustained for only a few short years. The loss of rain forests in South America means that the clouds they once made no longer blow across the Atlantic to drop their water on Africa. As a result, the Sahara grows by thousands of acres a year. What is the bottom line for Africans? More starvation. And the bottom line for Americans? Cheap burgers and growing waistlines.

One of those days...

I came home Friday morning to find out it had already been one of "those" days at the Carrigan house. Apparently, Bria - the 9 month old - had locked herself in Carly's room. Who knows how! After fiddling with the lock for several minutes, Chuck finally had to remove the knob from the door. I asked if she was crying; he said no, she was quiet. Too quiet. Which is worse - makes you worry all the more.

Today - I start my weekend shift. Listen for me from Noon - 4! See ya then!

Watch for the Rise and Shine show on TV!!!

It was cool having Evan from American Gladiators on the show Tuesday.

While he was here, the show brought a camera crew and they were all taping our every move. We didn't want to mention a lot about that part of it on the air...there's just something about repeatedly saying, "Hey, we're going to be on TV" that doesn't sit well with us. Even if we ARE excited about it...it's not really anything WE'RE doing that's all that interesting, and we didn't want to make it sound like it was, if that makes any sense.

They're filming kind of a "backstory" on Evan, since he's from here in Chicago. Right after he left our show, he went downtown to be on Mancow's show. But you know...I listened to the podcast of that afterwards, and I am pretty sure he did a better job on our show. It was more interesting, less stupid stuff...and he seemed like he could be himself a little more. Don't get me wrong, I like the Mancow show (much of it, anyway), but I think we got a clearer picture of Evan on our show yesterday.

ANYWAY...there will be a two-hour FINALS broadcast of American Gladiators on NBC Sunday night, February 17th....I believe it's at 7:00 p.m. (so maybe watch this and TiVo Extreme Makeover Home Edition);) Hopefully our signing of those release forms will result in seeing the smiling faces of the Shine.FM Rise and Shine crew on the show.

Ciao!
Johnny

Go cloth!

I think I've made up my mind to "Go Cloth". What does that mean? It means, I'm done with being asked at the grocery checkout, "paper or plastic?" Ok, nobody asks that anymore. But I'm done with collecting an endless supply of plastic bags that are simply winding up in a landfill. If I'm going to stand by my word to "Go Green", I need to find a better way. Thankfully, Jewel Osco and Kroger are offering cloth bags that you can purchase. I will purchase some on my next visit.

My husband provided me with this interesting article from the NY Times. Apparently, Ireland has imposed a 33 cent tax on plastic bags! That's good enough incentive for most Irish, calling the plastic bags "socially unacceptable". Maybe you, too, will join me in this small effort to "Serve God, save the planet."

Father Daughter Weekend

Chuck and Carly enjoyed some quality time together this weekend. True to his word, he took her to see the Pirates Who Don't do Anything again, which she loved. Again. She is TOTALLY into VeggieTales now. It's a nice change of pace from Dora.

Then, today, the two of them played in the snow together. After she ate a few icicles (inspired by stories of me eating them when I was a kid), I even got Chuck to show Carly how to make snow angels. She thought it was great and spent the rest of the time laying down!
