The federal government is encouraging Americans to sign up for a coupon program before their televisions go dark. The National Telecommunications and Information Administra-tion is attending this week's Consumer lectronics Show in Las Vegas to remind people about a program that allows people to sign up for 40-dollar coupons to help them buy digital television converter boxes. U.S. Department of Commerce spokesman Tony Wilhelm says February 2009 will mark the official transition to digital television.Wilhelm says the converter boxes are expected to be on sale at retailers starting next month. People who get satellite or cable television or who have digital televisions will not need the boxes. People can request coupons by calling 1-888-388-2009 or by visiting the web site www.dtv2009.gov. Congress has provided funding for more than 33-million coupons.
